Tools and Function Calling: 20+ Things the Model Can Actually Do

Calculator, calendar, contacts, weather, units, currency, dictionary, device status and more — each declaring whether it needs the network, each toggleable.

MyBenAI on Android: the tool sheet, with every tool individually switchable
Android the tool sheet, with every tool individually switchable

A language model on its own cannot tell you the time, do arithmetic reliably, or look at your calendar. MyBenAI ships more than twenty tools it can call to do those things properly, and a sheet where you decide which ones it may use.

What is included

  • Calculator — exact arithmetic, so the model stops guessing at numbers.
  • Clock and dates — your real local time, so "next Tuesday" resolves correctly.
  • Unit and currency conversion, and crypto prices.
  • Weather — current conditions and forecast for a place.
  • Dictionary and Wikipedia lookup.
  • Calendar — read your agenda, and create events on your confirmation.
  • Contacts — look someone up by name, on-device.
  • Device status — battery, thermal state, free storage, which model is loaded.
  • Web search, page reading and site crawling.
  • Document search and memory.
  • Scheduling, delegation and research.
  • Anything you add as an MCP or REST connector.

Every tool declares whether it needs the network

This is the design decision that makes the rest of the app coherent. Turn on offline mode and the tools that require the internet report themselves unavailable to the model, rather than failing when called. The model then answers from what it has instead of insisting on a search that will never complete.

Failures are results, not crashes

When a tool fails it returns a structured failure to the model rather than raising an exception. The model sees "that did not work, and here is why" and can try another route inside the same turn. A blocked feature behaves the same way: a locked tool tells the model it is locked, so it can explain the situation to you rather than dying silently.

You decide what it may touch

Every tool has a switch, shown in the screenshot above. Personas can carry their own allowlist, so a journalling persona simply has no network tools at all.
