Automatic Model Selection: The App Picks What Your Phone Can Run

MyBenAI profiles your RAM, cores and thermal headroom on first launch and downloads the best models your phone can actually run. No GGUF hunting.

The hardest part of running a local LLM is not running it — it is deciding which one. Pick too large and the app is killed by the operating system halfway through a sentence; pick too small and the answers are not worth reading. MyBenAI makes that decision for you, from measurements rather than guesses.

What it measures

On first launch the app profiles total RAM, CPU core count, the available accelerator, and the phone's current thermal state, then sorts the device into one of five tiers. On Android those come straight from memory: under 4 GB is the floor tier, 4 GB is low, 6 GB is mid, 8 GB is high, and 12 GB or more is flagship. On iPhone the chip is identified directly, because an A15 with 6 GB behaves nothing like an Android phone with the same number on the box.

What it budgets

The RAM budget is deliberately conservative: 45% of total on Android, 50% on iOS, and the selector subtracts a further 600 MB of headroom before choosing. That headroom is the difference between an app that runs for an hour and one that is terminated the moment you open the camera. Every model in the catalog carries its estimated runtime footprint, not just its file size, because a 1.2 GB file needs closer to 2 GB once its context is allocated.

What it downloads

A chat model, a Whisper model for voice, and a small embedding model for documents — typically well under a gigabyte in total on a modest phone. Downloads are resumable, verified against a SHA-256 checksum, and gated on Wi-Fi and charging by default, so a model download never eats a mobile data allowance or a battery you needed.

The paywalled larger models and the vision and image weights are deliberately excluded from that first plan even during the free trial — a new install should not pull multiple gigabytes for features you may never use. They stay one explicit tap away in the model manager.

And you can overrule all of it

Every one of these decisions is a default, not a lock. The model manager lists what is installed, what each costs in storage, and what else your phone could run — and the benchmark exists so you can settle the question with numbers from your own hardware rather than a spec sheet.
